Digital Citizenship and cyber safety in the classroom

What do our students need to know? What scenarios can we use to help make our students more aware?

Introduction: What do our students need to know to be safe, discerning users of technology? What resources can we use to support them? Andrew Churches has unpacked some extensive thinking about the 'Digital Citizen' and summarises there are six tenents of citizenship.

Netsafe says, " Educate users about their ‘digital footprints’. It is unrealistic nowadays to tell young people not to post their information online. Most teenagers have been doing so on social network sties since before teachers even heard the word blog. But this does not mean that students should not be educated about how information they post can be used to build a profile of them, which may not always be accurate, or desirable."

It is imperative that we educate our young people about digital literacy and what it means to be a safe, savvy digital citizen. Some great resources to share with senior students can be found on the Digital Citizenship education website. You will need to register to access this material. The resources have been developed to "create awareness of intellectual property rights and foster a better understanding of the rights connected with creative content." These include
:

  • Unit One: "Creative What?"
  • Unit Two: "By Rule of Law"
  • Unit Three: "Calling All Digital Citizens"
  • Unit Four: "Protect Your Work, Respect Your Work"
